Indian cricket board officials were said to convene on Sunday for discussions aimed at swiftly restarting the IPL after India and Pakistan reached an agreement to observe a truce in their ongoing violent border dispute.
India and Pakistan, both nuclear powers, agreed to stop fighting on Saturday. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia informed the website CricBuzz that they were “keeping a close watch on the developing circumstances.”
Saikia stated they would “make a decision regarding the restart of the IPL after discussing with all IPL stakeholders and relevant governmental bodies.”
Rajeev Shukla, the vice-president of the BCCI, informed Indian media that authorities will convene on Sunday to determine the next steps forward.
On Friday, the Indian Premier League was put on hold for a week following the abandonment of a game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala, which is under 200 kilometers (125 miles) away from Jammu, after reports emerged about explosions occurring in the northern town earlier that day.
A special train was arranged for players to return to Delhi on Friday as airspace was closed, while overseas stars began to head home on Saturday.
Teams on Sunday were reported to be contacting their overseas players and coaching staff about returning, with website ESPNcricinfo saying the IPL could restart around May 15 if given the go-ahead by the government.
There are 12 regular-season games left to play, followed by three playoff matches and the finale, which was initially set for May 25.
India and Pakistan have engaged in two out of their total three major wars over Kashmir, a contested region that each claims entirely but manages separately since they gained independence from British control in 1947.
On Wednesday morning, New Delhi initiated missile strikes as revenge for a lethal assault on tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir that took place two weeks prior and which India attributes to Pakistan.
Islamabad has denied any involvement.
At least 60 people have been killed on both sides of the border since Wednesday, in the worst violence in decades between the South Asian neighbours.
