Trump Broadens Ban: Russian Ships Now Barred From U.S. Ports

US President Donald Trump has prolonged the prohibition on Russian ships from entering American ports for an additional year. As stated in the US Federal Register, this restriction applies to all vessels with connections to Russia.

The document presently available on the Federal Register website indicates that the policies and actions of the Russian government still represent a national emergency due to their impact on U.S. foreign relations through actual or potential violations.

The limitation will stay in place for at least an additional year. The paperwork will be formally released on April 17.

The document states, ‘I am extending the nationwide state of emergency regarding the Russian Federation along with the emergency powers related to managing the docking and navigation of Russia-linked ships at U.S. ports as outlined in Proclamation 10371, for an additional one-year period.’

Ban on Russian ships entering the United States

On April 21, 2022, the U.S. implemented a prohibition on Russian ships from accessing American ports. This measure aimed to intensify Russia’s global isolation as it continues with its military offensive against Ukraine.

President Joe Biden of the United States stated that any ship displaying the Russian flag or controlled by Russia or its allies would not be permitted to dock at American harbors or reach US coastlines.

In April 2024, President Biden expanded the restrictions. As stated in earlier documentation, an exemption exists for ships seeking entry into U.S. ports because of unforeseen circumstances beyond their control. Specifically, this allows mariners from all countries to leave their vessel or be replaced so they can receive urgent medical treatment or address other humanitarian concerns.

Trump’s sanctions against Russia

Recently, Trump prolonged the national emergency in the U.S. for another year, which was initially declared by Joe Biden as a response to Russia’s detrimental international activities.
