The document details an event from 2017 where Martin refuted on RT that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was responsible for employing chemical weapons against citizens. Subsequently, within hours, Trump directed missile strikes against Syrian installations as a response to the assault that resulted in 90 fatalities.
In early 2022, during an interview with RT, Martin stated that there was “no proof” of a military accumulation of Russian forces at Ukraine’s frontiers. He also took issue with US officials’ statements and their disregard of Russia’s security concerns. Just nine days after this statement, Russia initiated its comprehensive assault on Ukraine.
Currently serving as the interim D.C. U.S. Attorney and vying for the permanent role, Martin was appointed by Trump. From August 2016 through April 2024, he made over 150 appearances on RT and Sputnik as an “expert commentator.”
Previous U.S. personnel and experts in national security indicated that Martin’s involvement with RT and Sputnik casts doubts on his viewpoints and authenticity. The report also mentioned that these individuals highlighted how the District of Columbia’s U.S. Attorney’s Office, being the nation’s biggest office with extensive jurisdiction over significant national security crimes, adds weight to their concerns.
Regarding inquiries into his pro-Russian stance and his position within the media, a representative from Martin’s office stated, “President Trump demonstrated wise judgment in nominating Martin to assume the role of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia on a permanent basis.”
After the full-scale invasion, Martin reduced his presence on Russian media outlets for several months. He then returned to conduct approximately 40 interviews with RT and Sputnik between late 2022 and April 2024.
