Oklahoma State Football Spring Update: Cowboys Amping Up Offense with New Talent

STILLWATER — The
Oklahoma State football program
joined the transfer portal promptly in early April, further augmenting its significantly revamped lineup.

The
Cowboys
has seen significant offseason transformations with an almost entirely new set of coaches and over 30 fresh faces joining the roster — a figure that continues to increase this spring.

Here’s an overview of the player movements through the transfer portal during the spring window for Ohio State University:

Players transferring to OSU football in spring portal window

Cam Abshire
, WR (Emory & Henry)

A tall wide receiver standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 185 pounds, Abshire accumulated more than 1,600 yards during his initial two years playing college football. Coming from Division II’s Emory & Henry University in Emory, Virginia, he aims to transition successfully as he moves up levels after recording 1,054 receiving yards with 13 touchdowns on 51 receptions last year as a redshirt sophomore for the Wasps team. His inclusion adds much-needed size to an otherwise revamped corps of receivers where very few stand taller than 6 foot 2.

Freddie Brock, Running Back (Georgia State)

A graduate transfer who still has one year left of eligibility, Brock ran for 819 yards and scored eight touchdowns during his final season at Georgia State. His addition brings instant depth and seasoned playmaking ability to a roster looking to identify their primary rusher this autumn. Starting out at Maine, Brock made the move to Georgia State in 2023 and managed an average of 6.2 yards per attempt across 16 contests spanning two years.

Christian Fitzpatrick, WR (Marshall)

Just days after Abshire’s commitment, the
Cowboys
added more height to the receiver depth chart with the 6-foot-4, 217-pound wideout from Marshall. Fitzpatrick has one year of eligibility remaining, after beginning his career in 2020 at Louisville. He spent 2021-23 at Michigan State before transferring to Marshall, where he had the best season of his career last fall. He started all 13 games, catching 34 passes for 576 yards and six touchdowns. Fitzpatrick has one year of eligibility remaining.

Wendell Gregory, an edge rusher from South Carolina

At Marietta High School in Georgia, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound Gregory transitioned from being a linebacker to an edge rusher. After playing in just two games as a true freshman with South Carolina where he was redshirted for part of the previous year, he might excel in the outside linebacker position within the team’s defensive scheme.
Ohio State University’s newest coordinator, Todd Grantham

Markell Samuel, Offensive Lineman (Appalachian State)

Samuel brings valuable seasoned expertise to an offense line that lacks extensive game time. This 6-foot-4, 300-pound graduate student started out as a defensive lineman in 2020 before transitioning to offensive tackle the next year. By 2023, he secured the position of starting left tackle and maintained this role throughout all 11 games he participated in during the previous season. Over his tenure, Samuel has accumulated more than 1,400 playing snaps.

Students departing Ohio State for the transfer portal

Here are the OSU players who have entered the transfer portal in the spring period:

RJ Lester, cornerback

Set to be a redshirt sophomore in the fall, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Lester was a consistent special teams contributor, playing in every game last fall. Originally from Fort Smith, Arkansas, he appeared in 16 games over his two seasons at OSU.
