Russia Imprisons Teen for Showing Support for Ukraine

Kozyreva was convicted for supposedly “undermining” the Russian armed forces following her act of hanging a banner with verses from a Ukrainian poem in a public area and speaking to the Russian-service branch of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. She insisted on her innocence, describing the charges as “an outright invention.”

In December 2022, at age 17, Kozyreva sprayed ” Murderers, you’re the ones carrying out the bombings” on a statue depicting two entwined hearts located in Saint Petersburg. This monument represents the connection between the city and Ukraine’s Mariupol region within Donetsk Oblast.

In early 2024, following a penalty of RUB30,000 ($370) imposed due to her comments about Ukraine on social media, she faced expulsion from the medical school at St. Petersburg State University. One month afterward, coinciding with the two-year mark since Russia initiated its complete invasion of Ukraine, Kozyreva placed a piece of paper inscribed with verses from a poem by renowned Ukrainian author Taras Shevchenko onto a memorial statue honoring him within a park in the city.

She got detained and remained in custody for almost a year before being put under house arrest in February.
