Turkey has expressed readiness to take on the role of monitoring a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. This statement was made by Turkey’s foreign minister during a “coalition of the willing” conference call involvingKyiv’s allies on Saturday, according to a report from Reuters citing a Turkish foreign ministry source.
The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Poland and Ukraine met in Kyiv on Saturday to discuss a peace deal. They agreed to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire on Monday with the backing of US President Donald Trump, threatening President Vladimir Putin with new “massive” sanctions if he failed to comply.
Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan joined the coalition of the willing call and emphasised Turkey’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the Turkish foreign ministry source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.
Mr. Fidan expressed Ankara’s backing for the initiatives aimed at an unconditional ceasefire and mentioned that Turkey was prepared to take on the responsibility of monitoring the ceasefire in Ukraine once it is implemented, according to the same source.
As a NATO member, Turkey has kept friendly relations with both Kyiv and Moscow following Russia’s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While expressing backing for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and offering military assistance, Turkey has also refrained from endorsing sanctions against Russia.
In March, Turkey’s defense ministry stated that they might participate in a potential peacekeeping operation in Ukraine should a truce be established between Ukraine and Russia. The previous month, military officials from Ukraine, Britain, France, and Turkey convened in Turkey to talk about securing the Black Sea following an eventual ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

President Donald Trump’s personal representative deviated from standard procedure by not using his own interpreter during discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to NBC News.
Steve Witkow, who is involved in negotiations to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine, allegedly held discussions with Mr. Putin in Moscow lasting multiple hours on February 11, March 13, and April 11. According to reports from Western officials shared with the American media outlet, they utilized their respective interpreters during these meetings.
Mr Witkoff lacks proficiency in Russian, and according to statements made to NBC by previous U.S. ambassadors, relying on Mr. Putin’s interpreters would prevent him from confirming the accuracy of the translation.
However the White House responded to the reports saying that Mr Witkoff “abides by all security protocols in coordination with the State department”.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky outlined his hopes for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire deal agreed by the US and European nations on Saturday.
He posted on X: “Today in Kyiv, we have an important format, an important meeting, and a significant signal. The leaders of France, Britain, Germany, and Poland—really united Europe and Ukraine. By uniting others, we are working to bring real peace closer, ensuring long-term security not only with the five of us here but also with our friends, partners, and leaders from 30 other EU and NATO countries participating online.
“We discussed the urgent steps needed to secure peace, and our most crucial outcome is a clearly united stance. We have agreed that a full and unconditional ceasefire—lasting at least 30 days—must begin on Monday, May 12. Together, we demand this from Russia, and we know the United States supports us in this effort.
An unconditional ceasefire signifies precisely what—it carries no conditions. Attempting to attach any conditions would be an endeavor to extend the conflict and hinder diplomatic advancements. This truce needs to be all-encompassing—covering land, sea, and airspace.

Russia said on Saturday that fighting had been taking place in four regions of Ukraine despite this week’s unilateral ceasefire by Moscow, saying its troops had been forced to respond to Ukrainian attacks.
Ukraine claims that Russia keeps attacking them and considers the ceasefire nothing more than a deception. Although they haven’t agreed to participate in this truce, Ukraine is advocating for a one-month cessation of hostilities. This call aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump’s plea to both parties involved in the conflict to reach an accord.
The Russian defense ministry stated in an announcement that their troops were adhering to the ceasefire—despite Ukraine’s denial—and staying positioned at former occupation sites. However, they claimed to be responding to “infractions” committed by Ukrainian forces.
The claims suggest that Ukrainian forces launched assaults in the Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson areas of Ukraine as well as close to 12 distinct villages within the Donetsk region. These attacks were reportedly thwarted by Russian soldiers.
A Ukrainian soldier who was injured and being treated at a field hospital in the Zaporizhzhia area informed the news agency Reuters late Friday that they have not experienced any ceasefires and noted no changes. He stated, “The shelling continues exactly as it did before, with drones still soaring overhead.”

US president’s irritation
In response to Russia’s hesitation regarding a ceasefire, Putin is pretending not to hear and continues acting according to his own desires.
This behavior aligns with the unusually
blunt warning from former spy boss
Sir Alex Younger, who spent his life in the covert world of intelligence, wants to convey a straightforward warning: “If you don’t confront him, he’ll keep coming back – how many more times must we hear this?”

Keir Starmer is about to take part in a press conference in Kyiv urging the Russians to agree a 30 day ceasefire in Ukraine,
penned by Whitehall Editor Kate Devlin.
It will once more place the Prime Minister alongside President Trump, marking another intense chapter in the recent diplomatic whirlwind he has experienced. This alignment could be perceived as validation of his approach to serve as a ‘link’ between the U.S. and Ukraine following the contentious meeting at the White House involving Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky.

Russia would require a halt to US and European arms supplies to Ukraine during any potential ceasefire, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with ABC News.
“Otherwise, this would benefit Ukraine. The country will keep up its full-scale mobilization, sending additional forces to the front line,” Mr Peskov stated.
“Ukraine will use this period to train new military personnel and to give a rest to their existing ones. So why should we grant such an advantage to Ukraine?”

The visit of European leaders to Kyiv for talks with the Ukrainians comes amid a push from the White House for a resolution to the Ukraine-Russia war.
President Donald Trump has been advocating for a swift peace agreement and reconciled relations with Kyiv to ink a minerals resources pact, facilitating potential U.S. investments in the nation.
On Friday, Mr. Trump expressed his desire for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “bring an end to this conflict.”
When questioned about the message he intended to send to Mr. Putin following the US embassy in Kyiv’s alert regarding a possible major aerial assault in the upcoming days, he responded.
He replied, “My message is clear for all involved: End this conflict. Conclude this ridiculous war. That is what I have to say to each side.”
Mr. Trump has exhibited a noticeable change in demeanor, indicating increasing irritation with President Putin’s delay in agreeing to a ceasefire and Moscow’s renewed insistence on its conditions for reaching an agreement.
President Trump has warned of potential increases in sanctions against Russia, yet he has indicated that he might withdraw from the peace process if progress isn’t made. On Thursday, he demanded a 30-day cease-fire, which President Zelensky stated he would promptly enforce should it occur.
The White House stated that Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky had a “highly effective and fruitful” conversation on Thursday.
The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, stated on Friday that Russia endorses a 30-day truce in the conflict; however, this should be carried out taking into account certain “particularities.”

Upon their arrival, Andriy Yermak, who serves as Chief of Staff for Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that they have “a significant amount of work ahead and numerous issues to address.” He further emphasized, “It is crucial to conclude this conflict with a fair resolution. Our aim should be compelling Moscow to accept a truce.”
