Czech Republic Frees Itself From Russian Oil Dependence, Government Announces

In Prague, WARNEWS reported that the Czech Republic has achieved full independence from Russian oil imports for the first time ever, as announced by government authorities on Thursday. This milestone was reached after completing enhancements to the TAL pipeline, which brings oil from western sources.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced at a press briefing televised by Czech Television on Thursday that the initial enhanced shipments along the pipeline have arrived at the central oil depot in the Czech Republic.

The Czech government has aimed to cease their partial reliance on the Druzhba pipeline, which has been supplying them with Russian resources for approximately six decades.

By the close of last year, Czech pipeline company MERO finished upgrading sections of the Transalpine (TAL) pipeline. This line transports oil from tanker ships docked at Italy’s Port of Trieste up to Germany. There, it connects with the IKL pipeline—linking Ingolstadt, Kralupy, and Litvinov—which then extends into the Czech Republic.

The TAL enhancement has increased the capacity accessible to the Czech Republic to 8 million tons annually, sufficient to cover the nation’s yearly requirements.

The Czech refinery Orlen Unipetrol was obtaining approximately half of its required crude oil from Russia and the remaining portion via TAL.

It has been drawing upon state reserves to maintain output levels after halting supplies via Druzhba starting in March. However, preparations are underway to transition fully to using TAL once its capacity expansion is complete.
