Drone Footage Reveals the Devastated Remains of Bakhmut in 2025

The defense of Bakhmut in the Donetsk area persisted for almost ten months, spanning from August 2022 to May 2023, making it one of the most intense conflicts within the Russo-Ukrainian War. Following its capture by Russian troops, the town suffered total devastation; this destruction was highlighted in a video shared by the Unmanned Systems Forces via Telegram.

“One time, Bakhmut served as a crucial railway junction and the heart of the salt trade, with a population of 84,000 Ukrainians. Even prior to Ukraine’s independence, on July 24, 1990, this place witnessed the raising of the first sky-blue-and-golden Ukrainian flag in the Donetsk area above the town hall,” stated the military in the video description.

Prior to the Russian invasion, Bakhmut’s civilian population was over 70,000. By early 2025, it is unlikely that any civilians still reside in the city.

The video displays different landmarks and structures prior to the conflict, as well as scenes depicting their condition following the entry of Russian troops. Extensive damage can be seen, and in certain regions, whole avenues filled with homes have been utterly obliterated.

The defense of Bakhmut persisted for almost ten months. Throughout this period, the city faced intense bombardment with heavy artillery and numerous attacks. In the conflicts over Bakhmut, the Russian forces incurred substantial casualties—approximately 100,000 dead and injured—with over 80% coming from the ranks of the Wagner PMC units.

Even though Russian troops claimed control over the city, combat persisted in nearby regions, with Ukrainian drones frequently capturing images showcasing the extent of the damage.

RBC-Ukraine has provided an update on the town of Toretsk, which Russian troops are trying to capture. By April 2025, it is estimated that around 48 civilians still reside in the area. Prior to the start of the conflict, the town’s population was roughly 35,000.
