The Ukrainian Parliament has approved an extension of martial law and military mobilization for an additional three months.
This ruling indicates that the wartime measures will remain effective until at least August 6.
Lawyer Yaroslav Zheleznyak disclosed that the prolongation of martial law was endorsed with a vote count of 357 against 1. Additionally, a proposal to sustain military mobilization was accepted with 356 votes in favor and 1 against.
According to Ukraine’s constitution, elections are not allowed to take place during martial law.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has previously challenged the legitimacy of Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky’s five-year tenure was originally scheduled to conclude in May 2024.
The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, responding to the prolongation of martial law, asserted that Kyiv aimed to “sustain its precarious framework.”
Earlier this year, in February, U.S. President Donald Trump referred to Zelensky as a “leader who holds power without holding elections.”
Trump’s comments led Ukrainians to rally around their leader, boosting Zelensky’s approval ratings.
