EU Blocks Sanctions on Russian LNG Imports

Rather than that, the European Commission is working on a strategy designed to eliminate the EU’s reliance on Russian energy sources by 2027. This blueprint is anticipated to surface in early May; however, specifics have yet to be disclosed.

The report stated that “the Commission is anticipated to present its 17th round of sanctions against Russia by June.”

Authorities mentioned that progress on these measures is happening at a slow pace, and the concept of prohibiting the importation of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) was most recently debated in January when the Commission concluded its 16th round of sanctions.

President Donald Trump of the United States has consistently stated that he wishes for the European Union to buy additional liquefied natural gas from America—an idea that EU authorities view as an opportunity to use as leverage in negotiations with Washington aimed at eliminating trade-damaging tariffs. Nonetheless, representatives from the US have not yet specified their requirements explicitly.

An official mentioned that the European Commission aims to avoid losing Russian liquefied natural gas because of sanctions, as this could undermine their bargaining stance.

EU governments are likewise worried about growing reliant on the United States for natural gas, which has become the third-biggest provider to the union following Russia and Norway.

Previous reports suggested that the Commission was set to reveal a comprehensive strategy in May for progressively phasing out Russian oil and gas imports—an initiative that had been postponed two times before.

Moreover, leaders from Europe’s biggest corporations are exploring the possibility of partially restarting their pipeline gas imports from Russia, which had been stopped following Moscow’s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
