In a Telegram posting from April 18, Zelenskyy denounced the Russian assault. “It takes sheer wickedness, completely disregarding human life, to carry out such missile attacks on a typical city during Good Friday, just before Easter,” he stated.
“And when we approach our allies, particularly the United States, seeking Patriot air defense systems—we are requesting the level of security that all nations deserve,” Zelenskyy noted additionally.
No country should deserve assistance more or less than another. It is a moral obligation to offer help, particularly when there’s a chance to make a difference.
The president stated that the first responders in Kharkiv are continuing their efforts at the location where the strike occurred. A missile detonated above a residential neighborhood, and another struck the premises of an enterprise next to some houses.
In the early hours of April 18, Russian forces targeted a heavily populated area of Kharkiv with a missile equipped with cluster bomblets, striking a residential skyscraper. Authorities stated that 102 individuals were wounded—66 women, 28 men, and eight children—and noted that one male perished as a result. Mayor Ihor Terekhov of Kharkiv cautioned that several people might still be buried beneath the debris from the strike. Additionally, he mentioned that over 20 apartment complexes and 30 individual houses sustained damage during this assault.
During an interview with CBS News released on April 14, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is prepared to buy ten Patriot missile defense systems from the United States at a cost of $15 billion. Subsequently, in a discussion with the leader of El Salvador, US President Donald Trump expressed frustration, stating that Zelenskyy “is always wanting to acquire more missiles.”
