The series stars an A-list cast of major celebrities including Emma Thompson, Rory Kinnear, Russell Tovey, Lydia West and Jessica Hynes, and it follows the lives of the Lyons family as they face tumultuous global and political affairs. Set over a 15 year period between 2019 and 2034, the Lyons family are battling against the problems technology brings.

It also highlights current social affairs and Emma Thompson plays successful businesswoman and politician Vivienne, who divides the public with her controversial opinions like voters needing to take IQ tests and saying she “doesn’t give a f—” about the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Rory, Jessica, Russell and Ruth Madeley play the Lyons siblings, who are all dealing with their own family dramas as well as the drastically changing technological landscape they find themselves in. Rory’s character Stephen and his onscreen wife Celeste (played by T’Nia Miller) find themselves working through the decision of their daughter Bethany (played by Lydia) saying she wants to identify as transhuman and turn herself into data.
As their surroundings seem to crumble apart, this situation also brings up significant questions regarding technological progress, migration, and people’s views on those seeking asylum as well as international politics.

Regarding the program, Russell mentioned
Metro
“, ‘Even when the world seems like it’s falling apart, you continue drinking, making love, laughing, and texting others. Despite all the awful events that unfold, you remain connected. Even as we navigate this frightening world, you’re still very much part of a family.’
The summary of the show states, “Years and Years,” created by Russell T Davies, follows an average family as they navigate their lives over the span of 15 years. Throughout this period, societal shifts occur at breakneck speed. The Lyons family will encounter all our aspirations for what the future holds along with every dread we harbor.”
They will experience ups and downs in their relationships, age gracefully, face separations, then reunite again, all while always anticipating what lies ahead. Every episode moves us one or two years further along, chronicling the journey of Daniel, Stephen and his spouse Celeste, siblings Rosie and Edith, matriarch Muriel, and the family’s offspring as they traverse a realm rendered unpredictable by political shifts, economic fluctuations, and rapid technological progressions.
However, this series doesn’t have a gloomy or scary vibe; instead, it brims with intelligence, kindness, and optimism. “Years and Years” revolves around family dynamics. It illustrates our resilience amidst a politically chaotic landscape where distinguishing between ideologies has become impossible. The narrative strikes an intense yet humorous chord, filled with poignant moments, culminating in the portrayal of a single family’s unwavering resolve to endure whatever the future holds.
The series has garnered significant acclaim from viewers and boasts an impressive 89 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A viewer commented, “This is one of the smartest shows I have watched,” while another noted, “It’s a fantastic program. It reminds me of ‘Black Mirror’ mixed with ‘This Is Us.’”
