Palestinian Filmmaker Fatma Hassona, Featured in Upcoming Cannes Doc, Dies in Israeli Missile Attack

The upcoming Cannes 2025 documentary titled “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk” features Fatma Hassona, a Palestinian individual who tragically died this Wednesday when an Israeli missile struck her house in Gaza. She was only 25 years old at the time of her death. Hassona worked as both a photographer-journalist for Palestine and an artist.

Hassona, who was known as “Fatem” by her friends and loved ones, died just one day after Cannes sidebar ACID announced it would be showing Iranian director Sepideh Farsi’s new documentary, “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,” as part of its 2025 lineup. A co-production between Iran, France and Palestine, the documentary explores Farsi’s relationship with Hassona and the “window” she provided to “see fragments of the ongoing massacre of Palestinians.”

The attack on Hassona’s home killed her, as well as nine members of her family.

“The ACID team shared in a statement released Thursday that they encountered filmmaker Fatma Hassona after watching Sepideh Farsi’s movie ‘Place Your Soul on Your Palm and Move’ as part of the Cannes lineup,” they stated.

Her enchanting smile mirrored her unwavering determination: documenting Gaza through photographs, providing meals amidst bombings, sorrow, and starvation. We followed her tale with great interest; every time she appeared safe, our joy knew no bounds, but so did our fears for her well-being.

“Yesterday, we were horrified to learn that an Israeli missile struck her apartment complex, resulting in the death of Fatem and her loved ones. As mentioned earlier, we had been watching and planning to showcase a movie wherein this young woman’s vitality seemed almost magical,” the statement went on. “That movie has now changed; it is not what we shall promote, endorse, or screen across various venues, beginning with Cannes. Each one of us—filmmakers and audience alike—must honor her luminous spirit.”
