Ukraine’s Weapons: Over 40% Now Domestically Produced, Says Zelensky

More than 40% of the weapons used at the front line are produced in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on April 16 on the occasion of the Day of the Defense Industry Worker.

Ukraine
has greatly grown its local defense sector in reaction to Russia’s comprehensive assault
invasion
.

The trend remains consistent: Ukraine will increasingly procure weapons to ensure its safety — both independently and alongside allies,
Zelensky
said.

“Ukraine must consistently possess its own robust armaments to ensure the existence of a powerful Ukrainian nation-state. The country also needs to maintain its technological edge so that Russia understands we will counteract each assault,” he further stated.

In its 2025 budget, Ukraine
allocated
Hr 55 billion ($1.3 billion) to defense manufacturing in an effort to reduce dependence on foreign deliveries.

Zelensky previously underscored that
international support
is crucial, cautioning that postponements or reductions—particularly those coming from the U.S.—might significantly undermine Ukraine’s capacity to maintain its defensive position.

Ukraine plans to secure more than $1 billion in 2025 for developing what is referred to as the so-called
Danish model
, purchasing weapons for Ukraine directly from Ukrainian weapon producers.

Denmark
was the initial nation to volunteer
donate arms
to
Ukraine
Through direct acquisitions from Ukraine’s defense sector, since Kyiv’s military spending doesn’t align with the capabilities of local arms manufacturing.
